Senator Charlie Dean, Sr. (1963)
Senator Dean was elected to Senate in 2007 and reelected subsequently, serving as Majority Whip from 2008-2010. Dean is currently the Chair of the Environmental Preservation and Conservation Committee and Vice Chair of the Criminal Justice Committee. Previously, Dean served as Citrus County Sheriff and was in the House of Representatives from 2002-2007.
Representative Mack Bernard (1997)
Representative Bernard was elected to the House of Representatives in September 2009 and has subsequently been reelected. He currently serves on the Civil Justice subcommittee, among others. In the 2011 legislative session Bernard sponsored 13 bills, 3 of which have been signed into law by the Governor.
On Wednesday, September 21st, former State Representative Audrey Gibson won the District 1 Florida Senate Seat after write-in candidate Andrea Austin bowed out of special election to replace Sen. Tony Hill. Senator Gibson joins Sen. Steve Oelrich and Sen. Charlie Dean as the third Crim Alumni in the Florida Senate. Among others, Gibson serves on the Children, Families, and Elder Affairs, the Community Affairs and the Military Affairs, Space, and Domestic Security Committees.
Senator Oelrich, a retired sheriff, has participated in the Criminology in Context speaker's series and committed his support to the Sgt. Daniel "Dale" Green Memorial Scholarship for Criminology students pursuing careers in law enforcement. He was elected to Senate in 2006 and has been reelected subsequently. Oelrich is the chair of the Higher Education Committee and Vice Chair of the Environmental Preservation and Conservation Committee.
Former Orlando Police Chief Val Demings announced her campaign for the 8th District Seat of freshman US Congressman Dan Webster in 2012. Val retired from the Orlando Police Department after 27 years of service and nearly four years as both the first female and first African American Chief of Police in Orlando's history.
