Florida State /  Alumni and Friends of Criminology / Eppes Hall

Eppes Hall

Eppes is a fitting home for the highest ranked academic program on campus, as well as the nation’s number one Criminology program.  Sitting cattycorner from the Wescott Administration Building atop Gallows Hill, Eppes shares both the commemorative brick plaza and the Mina Jo Powell Alumni Green with the University’s most recognizable landmark.  The College of Criminology & Criminal Justice was granted the honor of sole possession of the Eppes building by President Eric Barron in recognition for its number one ranking and increased need for student and faculty spaces.

First built in 1918, Eppes was the fifth building erected on the Florida State College for Women campus, and still bears a plaque indicating its place in FSU’s history. The intricate stonework on the building’s southern face includes the Great Seal of the State of Florida, shield bearing amphibians, and an exquisitely wrought stonework owl who looks down from her fourth floor vantage point onto the Westcott Fountain and the statue of Francis Wayles Eppes, the Building’s namesake, and the founder of Florida State University.

Eppes is a beautiful structure in a picturesque setting, but at 93 years old, it lacks certain modern amenities. Elevators, a technology infrastructure, and central air are among the most pressing needs for the building’s renovation as well as new interactive student spaces, a computer lab, and multiple classrooms. The renovation of Eppes, will bring this historic building into the 21st century, and provide the resources the College of Criminology & Criminal Justice needs to lead the field of Criminology research for the next hundred years.
