The Great Give
Hello everyone and welcome to the first CrimNotes e-newsletter of 2012. One hundred and sixty-one years ago today, January 23rd, the State of Florida passed legislation founding what would become Florida State University. To help our students and alumni celebrate the founding of FSU, the Alumni & Friends of Criminology are participating in The Great Give here at FSU. The Great Give is a 36 hour online fundraising drive that starts today and runs through midnight January 24th. All Criminology funds raised over the next day and a half will go toward the College’s alumni and student programs in 2012.
Here on campus, we will be holding a “Hot Chocolate Social” in front of Hecht House today. Drinks are free for all students, alumni, and friends who “Like” the AFC on Facebook and if you are in the area we would love to see you stop by. We will also encourage student membership in AFC to learn about the incredible programs AFC supports, programs like our speaker’s series, Crim in Context; the mentorship program, MORE for Women; Criminology’s international program, FSU Israel; and our Fallen Officer Memorial scholarships.
Since the Alumni & Friends of Criminology revived CrimNotes last year, we have seen our active membership double and heard from more than 120 alumni with whom we had lost contact. Thank you all for your interest in reengaging with Florida State University and our wonderful tradition of excellence in Criminology and Criminal Justice research and education.
This year in particular, we hope to bring even more Criminology alumni back into the fold, as Fall of 2012 will mark Criminology’s Diamond Anniversary hear on campus. Sixty years ago this fall, Vernon Fox arrived in Tallahassee to set the College on course to become the nation’s premier Criminology research center. To celebrate the achievements of the last sixty years and the founding of our College, the AFC will bring even more events and programs to our alumni and our students, culminating this fall in our Diamond Anniversary Gala here in Tallahassee. Stay tuned to CrimNotes or visit the Alumni & Friends of Criminology website to learn more about upcoming events, the nomination process for the AFC Hall of Fame, and how you can get involved.
